Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal believes they were punished for their defensive errors in Wednesday’s shock 3-0 Champions League defeat to CSKA Moscow
Manager Santiago Solari opted to field a weakened team at the Santiago Bernabeu with Real already confirmed as Group G winners.
Despite a bright start, Real were handed their first home Champions League defeat in nine years and their biggest ever one in Europe after goals from Fedor Chalov, Georgy Schennikov and Arnor Sigurdsson for CSKA.
The European champions were booed off at full-time by their fans with Carvajal admitting their errors during the game proved most costly in the end.
“It’s a competitive game and we go away frustrated to have been beaten at home,” said Carvajal on the club website.
“But we have to look at it in terms of the six games and we achieved our objective of finishing top.
“We had numerous chances to go ahead in the first half but defensive mistakes and CSKA’s clinical finishing have punished us”.
Real will next host 19th-place side Rayo Vallecano in La Liga this Saturday at the Bernabeu.
