Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi will forever remain untouchable for Neymar no matter how many times he breaks his own transfer record, says Tony Cascarino.
Neymar is seemingly pushing hard for a summer exit from Paris Saint-Germain following a disappointing two years in the French capital.
The Brazilian forward hoped his shock world-record €222m transfer to PSG in 2017 would allow him to finally escape Messi’s shadow at Barcelona and make him a Ballon d’Or winner.
Despite registering an impressive 51 goals in 58 games, however, Neymar’s time at PSG has been overshadowed by recurring foot injuries. Therefore, he’s spent months sidelined and seen Kylian Mbappe take centre-stage instead.
Interestedly, though, it appears Neymar wants to reunite with Messi at Barcelona for next season.
A possible cause behind the 27-year-old’s sudden U-turn could be down to the fact Messi is now 32 and is entering the final stages of his career. It may open the door for Neymar to become the main man at Camp Nou one day.
Although Barcelona will likely have to either match or better the €222m fee they received from PSG two years ago to re-sign their old star.
But Cascarino warned Neymar that his transfer value and fancy tricks will never enable him to become Ronaldo or Messi’s equal.
“Neymar is incredibly gifted, he’s extraordinary,” the ex-Chelsea forward told talkSPORT.
“He’s a bit like a Harlem Globetrotter, he can do things very few people can do with a football and his goal numbers are incredible.
“But I just don’t think he’s ever going to get into the same bracket as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi.
“I just don’t see it, and that’s what Barcelona would be paying for.
“Globally he’s huge. I think he’s the biggest shirt seller in world football and rightly so because he’s a great player.
“But it’s a huge amount of money.
“It’s extraordinary, especially considering [Ousmane] Dembele and [Phillipe] Coutinho were both £130m+ players.
“To put in those two, plus £90m, for Neymar – I think it’s a deal PSG will grab with both hands.”
