Casillas out of starting XI

during the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg match between Juventus and FC Porto at Juventus Stadium on March 14, 2017 in Turin, Italy.

The 36-year-old Real Madrid legend doesn’t perform well enough in trainings

Iker Casillas has been replaced for Porto’s recent matches due to his poor performances in training, says FC Porto boss Sergio Conceicao.

Speaking before the weekend’s match against Boavista, the manager talked about Casillas not taking his sessions seriously and not meeting Conceicao’s demands.

The former Nantes boss explained the media why Jose Sa has been in the starting eleven for the team, while Casillas sitting the games out.

“He’s trained below what I demand,” he said. “The players know what my rules are, how I lead and that I demand that everyone is always at 100 per cent in training.”

The coach went on to discuss whether he makes any exceptions with any of the players.

“I have to be consistent in the locker room, regardless of whether the player’s called Joaquim, Manuel or Antonio. If I make exceptions, I lose the whole squad. So, I won’t do that.”

Porto’s coach will not give the Spaniard first-team playing time only because of his name or history with Real Madrid.

“I can’t close my eyes on two weeks of training that did not reach my expectations and Iker cannot understand this. He didn’t train with the energy that I demand.”

The goalkeeper is largely remembered for his spell at Real Madrid, where he spent 25 years and won every major club title open to him, GOAL reports.

He has also managed to collect a bunch of honours at international level, winning the World Cup and being crowned twice as European Championship Spain.

It’s not the first time Casillas has been placed on the bench, Jose Mourinho did the same thing back at the Bernabeu, when the two had to work together.

Casillas has played 10 times for Porto so far this season, playing a role in the club’s trip to the first place in the Portuguese top flight, despite their poor performances in the Champions League, where the Portuguese club lost two of their first three games.

The Spaniard managed to keep 7 clean sheets and conceded only 6 goals in his 10 appearances, which doesn’t seem like a bad performance.

However, it seems as the goalkeeper faces a major battle to regain his starting role at Estadio do Dragao.
