After scoring a brace for Paris Saint-Germain in their 2-2 draw against Guingamp, Edinson Cavani revealed that he was unaware that he broke Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goalscoring record in Ligue 1
The Uruguay international rescued a point for the league champions against Guingamp on Sunday with his two late goals keeping PSG in the hunt to break the 100-point barrier in the standings.
On the back of his brace, Cavani has now surpassed his former PSG teammate Ibrahimovic for the most goals scored in Ligue 1 to a new record of 114 goals.
“I didn’t know that I had set a new record, but I’m happy to have written a little more history with this shirt,” said Cavani, according to FourFourTwo.
The 31-year-old denies that PSG has now lost their focus due to the fact that they have already sealed the league crown.
“No, we are not on holiday already. This is not true,” insisted Cavani
“Sometimes, there are difficult matches. We have won the Ligue 1 title, but we were still trying to concentrate as hard as possible – at 2-0 down, it was important that we at least fought back to draw.”
The club record goalscorer has no plans to leave: “I am under contract with PSG! I am very good here. I am proud to be here. I hope to continue on this path, which started five years ago. I want to keep winning with this shirt.”
