Where one-time Champions League winners Inter Milan failed, competition first-timers Atalanta succeeded.

Atalanta was rewarded for a phenomenal 2018/19 season with a place in the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League.

They were tournament debutants. While they have struggled on occasion, they have made it out of Group C alive and well.

The Italian side finished second in the group behind undefeated Manchester City.

In their final game things could have been very different. At the start of the night, they were bottom of the group.

However, Dinamo Zagreb’s loss to City coupled with their 0-3 drubbing of Shakhtar Donetsk saw them climb up the table.

A 66th minute VAR intervention, saw a goal initially ruled out for offside given. Castagne’s opener stood.

The hosts had Dos Santos rather harshly sent off in the 77th minute after Freuler made the most of an altercation.

Atalanta capitalized on the one-man advantage.

Pasalic added a second in the 80th before Gosens added a third on the fourth minute of injury time.
