According to a report, Chelsea have been told they must break the bank and pay in excess of £80m if they want left-back Ben Chilwell.
Chelsea must make Leicester’s Ben Chilwell the most expensive defender in the world if they intend to complete his transfer.
A poor defensive showing this term means Frank Lampard is intent on bolstering his options at the back ahead of next season.
Leicester’s Ben Chilwell is on Chelsea’s radar as Lampard looks to sort the left hand side of the Blues’ defence.
That position has been a weak spot for the club this term with Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri failing to impress.
However, an exclusive from the Mirror now claims Chelsea have been told they must pay more than the £80m fee Manchester United bought Harry Maguire last summer.
The Foxes have developed quite an habit of selling their top stars since their 2015/16 title-winning campaign. The likes of Riyad Mahrez, Danny Drinkwater, N’Golo Kante and most recently Harry Maguire have all left for big clubs. One similar thing though is that they all left for a huge amount of cash.
Ben Chilwell could continue that trend but Chelsea now face the headache of meeting that fee.
The 23-year-old already sees himself playing at Stamford Bridge and believes it boosts his chances to nail down the left-back spot with England.
Chelsea might have a lifeline though. Days ago, the same outlet claimed Chilwell could ask for a transfer exit which could eventually force Leicester to sell for lesser than intended.
