Juventus captain Giorgio Chiellini praised new boy Matthijs de Ligt as Europe’s best youngster and spoke on a potential Mauro Icardi move.
Juventus pulled off one of the biggest coups of the summer transfer window by signing Ajax captain De Ligt for €75m. For his debut campaign, he will likely hope to partner Chiellini in the heart of the Bianconeri defence.
In fact, manager Maurizio Sarri may be thinking along the same lines after playing De Ligt regularly during pre-season. The 19-year-old even featured in Wednesday’s 3-1 win over Juventus B.
And it seems Chiellini has joined the Dutchman’s growing list of admirers after labelling him Europe’s finest youngster.
“He is the most talented youngster in Europe and we are happy to have him with us,” said Chiellini as quoted by Calcio Mercato.
“All those who arrived raised the level of the team. In training, you see that every year we are getting stronger and this is a pleasure for those who like I was here for many years but it is also a stimulus and responsibility.
Juventus have also welcomed Gianluigi Buffon, Danilo, Merih Demiral, Luca Pellegrini, Aaron Ramsey and Adrien Rabiot to their ranks this summer.
Despite Sarri confessing they need to sell players now, reports continue to link the Old Lady to Inter Milan outcast Icardi.
“Fantasy football,” Chiellini on the Icardi rumours.
“Let’s talk about who’s here. If something happens, Fabio [Paratici] will be take care of it. Our goal is to create a group that stays compact and helps each other out during a season.”
Paulo Dybala scored twice and Juan Cuadrado netted the other during Juventus’ 3-1 friendly win over their B team.
