Manchester City will be without the services of Sergio Aguero for their Champions League encounter as he recovers from a knee injury.
Aguero has been out since going off in the 5-0 dismantling of Burnley. It has been over a month and the Argentine was expected to recover in time for their European fixture against Real Madrid.
Pep Guardiola was anticipating that he will have Aguero for selection but that scenario looks unlikely now.
Despite this, Ilkay Gundogan is bullish about City’s chances against Madrid. The Germany international believes Gabriel Jesus will stand up and make himself count.
“It is definitely disappointing to not have Sergio available,” Gundogan told Manchester City’s official website.
“We wish him a speedy recovery and to have him back as soon as possible, because he is such an important player for us.
“We have to deal with injuries, as we did in the season with Aymeric [Laporte] not being available. We have to do the same now with Sergio’s situation. I am sure we will be able to do that.
“Other players will have to step up. We have Gabby [Jesus], who is an amazing player, but we also have different players who can play as a false nine.
“I am sure we will be able to deal with it, but of course, we will miss him.”
Going into the second leg, Manchester City have a slender 2-1lead over Los Blancos. Anything could happen as Los Blancos are unbeaten since restart while City have occasionally found opposition difficult to unlock.
