The Athletic has revealed new details around the summer transfer of Ronaldo to Man United.
Cristiano Ronaldo left Juventus after three years to make his Manchester United return last summer. The move was surprising, but Ronaldo has certainly lived up to expectations.
The Portuguese superstar quickly established himself as a key player, maintaining his form despite United’s struggles. Having scored 14 goals, Ronaldo is also his side’s top scorer this season.
In a new article, The Athletic has revealed Sir Alex Ferguson was a key figure behind Ronaldo’s move back to United. Manchester City were eager to secure the former Real Madrid star’s signature, but Ferguson’s involvement reportedly changed everything overnight.
The English source claims the former United boss had called club owner Joel Glazer to persuade him over the deal. Other sources have revealed Ferguson rarely speaks directly with the United owners. However, in an effort to stop Ronaldo from playing for the city rivals, he had decided to make the call.
Ronaldo has spoken about Ferguson’s impact on his professional career several times. The pair reunited in an interview conducted by MUTV last month.
