Maurizio Sarri has implied that he might rest Cristiano Ronaldo on Saturday as Juventus continue the defence of their Serie A crown away to Lecce.
It’s been a busy couple of months for Ronaldo having played 14 matches for both Portugal and Juventus since the latter’s opening day 1-0 Serie A win at Parma on August 24.
Although the 34-year-old hasn’t shown signs of fatigue after scoring six goals and winning Man of the Match in five of his last eight outings.
Ahead of the trip to 16th-place Lecce, however, Sarri is considering whether it would be better to give Ronaldo a break.
“With Cristiano Ronaldo, we speak often. Even he will need to rest sometimes, we’ll see when based on how he’s feeling,” said Sarri on the club’s website.
The Juventus boss may also give veteran centre-back Leonardo Bonucci a break in the upcoming games. However, it will likely not come this weekend given the lack of options at Sarri’s disposal.
Douglas Costa, on the other hand, will continue to remain sidelined due to his ongoing muscle problem. The Brazilian winger hasn’t played for the Bianconeri in over a month.
“Right now, we don’t have a lot of options in order to completely rotate the squad. We’ll change things with regards to the conditions of the players,” continued Sarri.
“Mattia de Sciglio has been training with the rest of the squad for a few days. But he needs a few more to be at optimum physical condition.
“Leonardo Bonucci has always played, and he was crucial. We’ll see if we can give him some rest in the next few games.”
Following his match-winning brace against Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League on Tuesday, however, Paulo Dybala may start again for Juventus.
“Paulo Dybala has always done well in the season, so I expected a great performance from him. I had no doubt,” added Sarri.
The Lecce and Juventus match starts at 15:00 (CET) on Saturday.
