Cristiano Ronaldo snubbed by former boss in Ballon d’Or verdict

Juventus coach Massimiliano Allegri believes Lionel Messi deserved to win the Ballon d’Or this year.

Lionel Messi won the seventh Ballon d’Or of his career on Monday. The Argentine icon is now two prizes away from Cristiano Ronaldo in the Ballon d’Or’s all-time charts.

The final rankings of this year’s award were widely criticized by footballing figures and fans. Despite Messi’s Copa America-winning campaign with Argentina in the summer, Robert Lewandowski was the top favourite to win the prize. Having won a treble with Bayern in 2020, the Polish star continued his great form throughout the current year. However, Messi ultimately defeated him in a close race.

Cristiano Ronaldo finished sixth, which is his worst performance since 2010. This is in contrast to his incredible form since returning to Manchester United in the summer.

The Portuguese superstar played for one season under Massimiliano Allegri before Juventus sacked the Italian in 2019. Allegri returned to Juventus in the summer, but Ronaldo left a few weeks later to make his Man United return.

In a new interview, Allegri has given his verdict on who he considers as the best player in the world.

He said (via Daily Record): “In the Ballon d’Or they voted for Messi, let’s say on a technical level Messi is the best in the world.

“After that I don’t know how they judge the Ballon d’Or.”
