Jordi Cruyff the former Manchester United player and son of Barcelona legend Johan has been appointed manager of the Ecuador national team.

Cruyff enjoyed a playing career that included spells at both Barcelona and Manchester United.

The Dutchman was most recently a manager in China with Chongqing Lifan. But has also enjoyed spells with Maccabi Tel Aviv of Israel and AEK Larnaca of Cyprus.

He has now been appointed the manager of the Ecuador national team.

Cruyff junior never reached the dizzying heights as a player or a coach as hid father Johan did.

However, he was recently linked with a return to Barcelona. But he moved quickly to distance himself from the speculation.

He has signed a three year deal with the Ecuadorian Football Federation.

According to Marca, at his unveiling, he was looking forward to a new challenge.

He said:

“I feel very excited about this new challenge.”

“I would like to thank the FEF.”

“Especially its president, its board and its sports director, Antonio Cordón, the confidence placed in me and in my coaching staff to lead La Tri.”

His first task is the start of the Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifiers for South American teams. His opening game with his new side comes against Argentina and Lionel Messi.
