Eric Abidal has revealed that Matthijs De Ligt reject his move to Barcelona in the favor of Juventus.
Before finally making his move to Juventus, Matthijs De Ligt had a plethora of offers from top European clubs. The former Ajax defender was one of the most sought after players during the summer of last year. The Dutchman helped his former team reach the semi-finals of the Champions League before finally losing out to Tottenham.
De Ligt took a long time to think about his next club before finally putting his signature on the contract with the Old Lady. Barcelona sporting director Eric Abidal has revealed that the 20-year old was contacted by the club. But the defender rejected the prospect of moving to the Camp Nou.
“De Ligt didn’t want to come. He gave me the feeling that he changed his vision,” Eric Abidal said in a report presented by Calciomercato.
“He’s a player who wanted to play and only play. At Barcelona, this can’t be guaranteed.
“I don’t know if he had a desire to come here, but since he joined Juventus, I’d say he didn’t,” Eric Abidal assumed.
