Matthijs has revealed he was told to learn from Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci if he wanted to be successful at Juventus.

De Ligt joined Juventus in a 77million move from Ajax and arrived with a big reputation on his name.

After a shaky start to life in Italy, the 20-year-old has cemented a place in the heart of the Bianconeri defence.

Juventus had Cristiano Ronaldo in their ranks but De Ligt says he was lured to learn from the likes of Chiellini and Bonucci to become a top defender.

“Bonucci and Chiellini are just players, but they are players who won everything for nine years and know what it’s all about,” he told Ziggo Sport.

“I was told: ‘You are a great player, but above all learn from these lads. We need you this season.’ It’s important that I am there.

“You need far more balance at Juve compared to Ajax, to focus more on the defensive movements, which is what I’m doing now.”

De Ligt has featured in 19 league matches for Juventus and has been an important player in their campaign so far.
