Losing Philippe Coutinho mid-way into the 2018/19 campaign to Barcelona was a hard one to swallow. The ‘Little Magician’ was a key cog in the Reds line-up, managing 54 goals and 45 assists in 201 games.

But what would have happened had Liverpool not sold Coutinho for a whopping €145m? Would Virgil van Dijk still had joined? And what about the team results?

It’s undeniable Coutinho’s big-money exit paved the way for Van Dijk to join the club in January 2018 from Southampton for €84.65m, which made him the world’s most expensive defender at the time.

The Brazilian’s fee may even have helped Liverpool sign Alisson Becker from AS Roma later that year for a further €62.50m.

On the pitch side of things, meanwhile, Klopp changed Liverpool’s system. Gone were the day they depended on the playmaker so much, as others stepped up to the mantle in his absence.

The German implemented a new 4-3-3 formation, which brought a new lease of life into the squad on route to great success.
