Del Piero warns Conte not to stretch too far

Inter Milan let their two-goal lead slip away as Borussia Dortmund came back in the second half to win their UEFA Champions League encounter.

In a repeat of their defeat at the hands of Barcelona at Camp Nou, Inter Milan succumbed to defeat against BVB. Antonio Conte was understandably angry as he suffered his second defeat of the Champions League campaign.

After the match, legendary Italian striker turned pundit, Alessandro Del Piero, had kind words for Conte. He admitted that Inter does not have the squad size to fight on all fronts, which is affecting their performances.

However, del Piero is of the opinion that the Nerazzurri still have an outside chance to make the knockout rounds. The San Siro based-outfit need to win their next European fixtures against Prague and Barcelona and hope other results favor them.

“Inter dropped off and became unconscious. Inter have shown that they can play at this level, there is a growth process. Today Conte finds himself in a position of strength and felt compelled to say ‘I told you’,” Del Piero commented in the Sky Sport Italia studios.

“Inter risk ruining the good they have done but if they perform like this away in Prague, they will win and progress. They are also only one point behind Juventus. Conte must be careful not to push too hard though.”

Del Piero’s comments also shed light on Inter’s ambitions for the season. The San Siro based outfit are second in Serie A, one point behind leaders Juventus. In addition, they are also battling out for a place in Champions League knockout rounds.

Conte understands the situation he finds himself in and was quick to point out following Inter’s defeat.

“We have too limited a squad to face both Serie A and Champions League football this season. I mean limited in terms of numbers and quality,” the former Chelsea manager told Mediaset.

“Some players have to be on the field constantly and in the long run, you do pay for that. I am furious because this cancels out the good work.”

Inter Milan host Hellas Verona at the San Siro, while Juventus welcome AC Milan in their next Serie A fixtures.
