Denis Suarez, the ideal offensive midfielder for Arsenal

Time to talk about Spanish midfielder Denis Suarez, the player that Unai Emery wanted to bring from Arsenal and has repeatedly dubbed a “winger”.

Fresh out of a loan from FC Barcelona to Arsenal, it’s time to talk about midfielder Denis Suarez and what he can really bring to the Gunners now that manager Unai Emery was impressed with his debut against Manchester City last weekend.

Despite losing the match against the Citizens, the Gunners saw how the Spanish midfielder performed quite well during the 24 minutes after replacing Kolasinac.

But Emery’s idea to use Suarez as a winger isn’t quite what the player has been doing throughout his whole career, Denis is actually more of an offensive midfielder who has the ability to dribble but works best down the middle.

Something very similar to what players like Ivan Rakitic or Andres Iniesta did at Barcelona, the problem with Suarez at the Catalan club was his competition.

The man had some of the greatest midfielders in the world to compete against, which was something that gave him too much pressure to handle and he eventually decided to leave on a loan so he could get more minutes.

Suarez expects to become a regular for Emery, and the Spanish manager already confirmed he will use Suarez more starting next weekend at Huddersfield Town.

Suarez’s career has been filled with a lack of participation and minutes, the best performances he offered in top-flight football came when he was playing for Villarreal.

But Denis actually belonged to Manchester City after Celta de Vigo sold the Spaniard to the Citizens when he was still very young.

During the two whole seasons that he played at City, Suarez actually didn’t play a single Premier League minute and Barcelona finally decided to sign him when he was still 19 years old.

The Catalan club did what most major clubs do when they get very talented youngsters and need them to improve, they sent Suarez on a loan to Sevilla for the 2014-2015 season but had very little participation in the squad that won the Europa League on 2015.

Finally, the year at Villarreal was the most impressive one in regards to his evolution as a player.

Hector Bellerin, Arsenal, Premier League

Emery explains when Bellerin and Tierney will be featured

According to Arsenal manager Unai Emery, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney will feature for the Gunners' Under-23 squad against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

FC Barcelona finally saw a glimpse of that potential in Suarez and decided to get him back after only one year playing in the “Yellow Submarine”.

The player has remained in the Catalan club until this winter transfer window with very little participation, he saw the opportunity to play for Arsenal and he took it.

The decision that Suarez made to leave one of the best clubs in the world on loan, came right after the Catalan club decided to announce Frenkie de Jong’s transfer from Ajax.

The Spanish player took that as a hint that he wouldn’t be important for the club in the upcoming years, which is why he is choosing to give the Premier League a chance and finally become important for a top-flight club.

Another reason why Suarez has decided to play for the Gunners is the National Team, he must get the minutes he requires in order to get those calls from manager Luis Enrique and there was no way he would get them if he stayed at Barcelona.

This might be the most important opportunity that football has given Suarez to finally leave his mark, he is actually a very talented player but he hasn’t been very fortunate throughout his career.

One thing is for sure though, Denis might be able to play as a winger as Unai Emery said but he performs far better as an offensive midfielder who creates chances for his teammates from that position.

Suarez is simply not fast enough to play as a winger, but Unai Emery will discover that once Denis gets more minutes for Arsenal.
