Memphis Depay may miss the rest of the season after sustaining what has been described as a “serious” knee injury.
Lyon suffered a home defeat at the hands of Rennes today in Ligue 1.
However, the result pales into insignificance if the initial diagnosis of Depay’s injury are accurate.
The Dutchman had to be substituted at half-time as he was unable to continue.
According to Lyon sporting director Juninho, the outlook is not good.
He told Olympique Lyonnais TV, it was serious.
“We expect Memphis’ injury to be quite serious.”
“We expect it to keep him out for the rest of the season.”
“He’s our captain and I’m sad for him.”
The injury will also be of grave concern to Netherlands manager Ronald Koeman.
With Euro 2020 approaching this will not be the kind of news he will be wanting to hear.
This kind of recovery time being quoted suggests that the injury is an anterior cruciate ligament to his left knee.
The former Manchester United man has demonstrated some fantastic form in France.
It will be interesting to see if this delays his progression to the next level.
