Desailly believes it “would be funny” to see Ajax win the Champions League

The former Champions League winner believes Ajax have what it takes to win the European competition this season.

Ajax has been great this UEFA Champions League season. After qualifying from the Group Stage, the Dutch Eredivisie side kicked out Real Madrid and Juventus from the competition.

Now they have a 1-0 advantage against Tottenham Hotspur and are just one game away from the European competition final.

Which is why former Champions League winner, Marcel Desailly, believes the Dutch Eredivisie team has what it takes to win it this year.

“It would be funny to see Ajax winning the Champions League,” Desailly said about how this Ajax looks like the 1995 AC Milan squad according to SCMP.

“We had just won the Champions League against Barcelona 4-0 and the year after we had to play against this young team Ajax in the final of Champions League in Vienna. And they beat us.”

“They beat us 1-0. The big AC Milan has been beaten by Edgar Davids, 19 years old, Clarence Seedorf, 19 years old, Kluivert, 18 years old,” he added.

“I want something similar. Why? Because of the passing, the type of play that this team has, it’s modern football. It’s offensive all the time, getting the ball to go forward. It’s something very special.”

He was also asked who is the best footballer he has ever played against.

“Ronaldo, the Brazilian … The speed, the touch, he was just amazing. Incredible,” Desailly said.

“Maldini, every time we were playing against Inter Milan, Ronaldo was the only player where Maldini was telling me ‘Marcel, stay around me. He’s too fast. I cannot handle it by myself’.”
