Lazio fell to a three-one loss to Napoli, however, Ciro Immobile scored to equal a Serie A record and secure the golden boot.

The result was not the way Lazio wanted to round out their Serie A season.

For Napoli’s Gennaro Gattuso it was a great way to finish what had been an emotional rollercoaster of a season both on and off the field.

While it is a far cry from last seasons second-place finish for Napoli it represented a huge turn around in fortunes following the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti early in the season.

The San Paolo based side finished seventh after it was all said and done.

As for Simone Inzaghi, the season kind of fell flat in the end with a fourth-place finish. There were hopes of a glamorous run for the title but even Ciro Immobile’s goals were not enough to keep up the pressure on Juventus at the summit.

So despite the valiant victory, three-one for Napoli, it was a game whose only significance was if Lazio could climb above Atalanta into third.

Oh yes, and then of course the small matter of a Serie A goal-scoring record.

Ciro Immobile needed just one more goal to tie Gonzalo Higuain’s record of 36 goals in a single Serie A season.

Low and behold, the Italian marksman delivered the goods in the 22nd minute. His goal drew his side level after Fabian Ruiz gave Napoli the lead in the 9th minute.

Unfortunately, Immobile could not make the record his own and he failed to find the back of the net again.

Worst still his side conceded two more goals in the second half to end up on the losing side and finish the season in fourth.

Check out all the highlights including the all-important 36th goal of the Serie A season for Ciro Immobile!

Immobile was already guaranteed the golden boot for Serie A, he has now added the same award on a European level after ousting Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.
