Eusebio Di Francesco was unveiled as the new Cagliari coach and took out time to hail President Tommaso Giulini as the reason behind his decision.
Cagliari celebrated their centenary with Serie A survival. The Gli Isolani had a great start to the season but post lockdown saw their fortunes tumble.
They finished in a respectable 14th place, 10 points above the relegation slots.
The club have decided to move in a new direction and appointed Eusebio Di Francesco as their new head coach. He replaces Walter Zenga at the Sardegna Arena.
Di Francesco has stated that it was Cagliari President Tommaso Giulini who helped him make up his mind.
The former AS Roma manager shared that he is eager to start but will not make a lot of changes without completely knowing the squad.
“First of all, the President’s great desire to bring me to Cagliari convinced me,” Football Italia quoted Di Francesco at a press conference. “He wanted me at all costs.”
“I really want to start again after three difficult months at Sampdoria, where I accepted but without much conviction.”
“There was immediately a great empathy here. Many have written that I was sacked from Sampdoria, but I resigned after three months, in which I didn’t do well.”
“Unlike then, I’m overwhelmed. We will start from 4-3-3, even if I’m not a fundamentalist. I have to get to know the players in training.”
Cagliari finished the season in great form, beating Juventus in their final Serie A fixture.
