Angel Di Maria says he would have preferred to have the number 11 shirt at Manchester United.

In 2014, in a move that saw him become the then most expensive British transfer of all time, Angel Di Maria made a switch from Real Madrid to Manchester United.

Manchester United had high hopes of Di Maria, a player who signed for the club on the back of winning the Champions League, and handed him the number 7 shirt previously worn by the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, and Erick Cantona and such.

But the Argentine failed to deliver what was hoped from him. After spending just a year at Old Trafford, Di Maria was shipped off to Paris Saint-Germain.

Recently, as Goal reports, the 31-year old revealed that he would have preferred a different number at Man United.

“I don’t really know. When I arrived, I saw that the number 11 was available,” he replied when asked about his shirt number at PSG.

“It’s a shirt number I wore a lot when I was younger and I was keen to get once again.

“At Real Madrid, number 11 was already taken, so I took 22. At Manchester United they gave me number 7, I didn’t get a choice. I would have liked 11 but there we are. Here, I had a choice, so I chose 11!”
