Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria has credited manager Thomas Tuchel for his strong form this season after struggling under Unai Emery
The Argentina international was drifted in and out of the PSG team last term by Emery with only one start in the club’s seven Champions League games before they crashed out at the last-16 stage to eventual winners Real Madrid.
But, under Tuchel this season, Di Maria has emerged as one of the star players in the Parc des Princes, alongside Neymar and Kylian Mbappe, with seven goals and eight assists in 25 appearances across all competitions.
And Di Maria, who signed a new three-year deal at PSG in October, has handed Tuchel the credit for his upturn in form.
“He has great confidence in me because last year I could not play as much as I wanted,” Di Maria told France Bleu.
“When he arrived we had a meeting. He came to see me in Barcelona when I was with the Argentina squad and he simply told me that he wanted me to stay, that there was no other option.
“What matters to me is to give my best, to give him the affection he has for me and to prove myself to him on the field.
“Unai Emery was playing a system with three forwards, so now I’m happy to play [more].
“I know I also have to work defensively to balance the team, but that’s all good as long as I am playing.”
PSG, who won 3-0 against Amiens last weekend, will be looking to continue their strong form in Saturday’s Ligue 1 match against Guingamp.
