Diego Simeone refused to get carried away from Atletico Madrid’s 7-3 thrashing of bitter rivals Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.

In what was a one-sided affair in New Jersey, USA, Atletico completely demolished Real with Diego Costa taking just 45 seconds to put them in front on Friday.

The former Chelsea striker later added another two goals, with Joao Felix and Angel Correa also getting on the scoresheet to put Atletico 5-0 up heading into the break.

Five then became six for Atletico, when Costa fired home his fourth goal of the match just six minutes into the second-half. While Nacho Fernandez pulled one back for Real, substitute Vitolo produced a remarkable solo effort to restore Atletico’s six-goal lead.

Despite Real pulling back another two goals from Karim Benzema and Javi Hernandez, it took nothing away from Atletico’s stunning display at the MetLife Stadium.

Speaking to reporters after humiliating their city rivals, however, Simeone attempted to remain grounded.

“I do not rush to anything. I live in the reality of the moment,” said Simeone, according to SportsStar.

“It was a good game. I see them with enthusiasm, optimism, enthusiasm. Now, wait for the next game to rotate the players and get to LaLiga.”

The Atletico boss added: “I do not consider this match to be the reality of potential between each other.

“We prepared the game well. Having seen Madrid, we looked for where we could harm them.

“We tried to find good places at the exit of the ball … and we were very precise, that in football it is important.

“There is always something that can be improved. Beyond the scoreboard, Madrid went to our end with great force. And they had chances.

“That has to be adjusted and try to add talent and effort. Today all the important teams have three or four talented players in the group.”

Atletico will now take on the MLS All-Stars next Thursday for another pre-season friendly.
