Joao Felix’s father announced that Diego Simeone has already spoken to his son ahead of his prospective €126m move to Atletico Madrid.
Felix’s profile as one of the most promising young players in Europe has seen several clubs queue up for his signature this summer.
Speculation over the 19-year-old’s future has grown even more intense in the past few months, with Juventus, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United all reportedly keen.
But Benfica confirmed on Wednesday that they’d received a €126m bid from Atletico instead and were reviewing the offer.
Spanish news outlets have claimed that Felix’s switch to the Wanda Metropolitano could be completed as soon as this weekend.
And now the Portugal international’s father has dropped another hint by claiming that Los Rojiblancos coach Simeone has made contact with his son.
“My son has already spoken with Simeone…I do not know about what, because he did not tell me that,” Carlos Sequeira told Movistar on Felix.
“Atletico are one of the strong possibilities. In the next weeks everything will be solved. Now we’re going to spend a few days on holiday, at least until the weekend. If you go to Atletico, it’s a great club.
“He always takes everything seriously. It is in his character. It was like that when he was 10 years old. It has not changed and I hope it does not ever.”
Felix bagged 15 goals and nine assists to inspire Benfica to a 37th Primeira Liga title last season. Although it was in the Europa League where he truly made his mark after scoring a hat-trick against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Eagles president Luis Filipe Vieira has even tipped Felix as a potential future Ballon d’Or winner. While observers in Portugal have dubbed him the “new Cristiano Ronaldo”.
