Dimitar Berbatov has advised Manchester United to get the right people around Anthony Martial to extract his full potential.
Martial arrived at Old Trafford in September 2015 in a £36m deal from AS Monaco at the age of 19 following a breakthrough campaign in France.
The French striker finished as United’s top-scorer in his first season, with 17 goals in 49 appearances under Louis van Gaal.
But Jose Mourinho’s arrival in 2016 provoked a change in fortunes for Martial. In the past three seasons, he’s struggled to make the United line-up on a regular basis and was close to leaving the club as a free agent.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s appointment as Mourinho’s replacement, however, convinced Martial to commit himself to a new five-year contract in January.
Although things haven’t quite so well for Martial ever since. In fact, he’s only scored once in his last 10 appearances for United. This has drawn fresh criticism for the 23-year-old, with even Solskjaer being left unimpressed by his attitude in Sunday’s 1-1 draw against Chelsea.
But Martial’s former Monaco team-mate Berbatov still holds him in high regard and revealed how some simple guidance for the Frenchman could do wonders for United.
“He’s a quiet guy. He’s like me, he keeps to himself. That’s not a bad thing,” the ex-United striker told Metro.
“He has not reached the level yet where I think he can be. The first training session at Monaco I was going: ‘What the f**k?!’
“As a football player, you can see straight away. You recognise straight away and this guy he had something.
“He needs someone to say: ‘Listen this is not the right way, over there is the right way if you want to be the best'”.
Martial has managed 12 goals and three assists in 37 appearances for United this season.
Anthony Martial has the lowest average for distance covered per 90 minutes out of all Premier League forwards this season with just 8.4 km, while Lukaku ranks the fourth lowest with 8.7 km. [sky] #MUFC pic.twitter.com/ssncHPnngn
