Dortmund got drunk

Ilkay Gundogan admitted how the atmosphere was during training sessions after Dortmund’s Bundesliga success

The Germany international claims he and his Borussia Dortmund team-mates often attended training sessions drunk in their title-winning season.

Jurgen Klopp led Borussia to success in the 2010-2011 Bundesliga seasons, after 9 unsuccessful years. 4 games before the season was over, as Dortmund led the table by 6 points, their players had already started to celebrate.

“After the games we often went out with eight to ten players, many of us being single. In training the next morning, we usually arrived quite drunk – and you could see this,” Gundogan revealed in excerpts, published by Bild, from the not-yet released Jurgen Klopp biography.

“I think we’ve done this in the right measure and it bound us together even more,” he added.

That season ended with BVB winning the title by 7 points ahead of Bayer Leverkusen as Bayern Munich came in third.

The team spirit seemed to break down after Mario Gotze signed for rivals Bayern, as rumours have suggested before Dortmund’s Champions League semi-final fixture against Real Madrid.

“I browsed through the internet and saw the headline: ‘Gotze signed for Bayern’. I texted Marco Reus, because he has the same agent and was good friends with him, and asked: ‘Is this true?’,” Gundogan addressed the topic.

“And he said: ‘Yes, it’s true. I know it since yesterday and it’s true’. I just couldn’t believe it.”

Jurgen Klopp admitted that moment was painful for him just as much as it was for the players.
“For me it felt like a cardiac infarction. I couldn’t say anything or go out with my wife,” the coach told Guardian.

For that deal to go through in 2013, Bayern paid the release clause of £33 million to Dortmund and signed the Germany international, who left Borussia Dortmund after 12 seasons.
