The Germany international is out of contract at the end of 2019/20 campaign, and BVB will save a lot of heartache if they allow him to leave.
For a brief time last decade, Mario Gotze was the darling of Germany. He scored the winning goal for Die Mannschaft and was on top of the world. But like everything with Gotze, good times do not last.
Coming through the Der BVB youth setup, he won the Bundesliga twice and would also add a DFB-Pokal winners medal. Good times did not last and Gotze defected to Bayern Munich.
The Memmingen native would add seven more titles to his tally without making an impact at the Allianz Arena. Injuries would plague him and he has not been the same player since.
Not fit for a complete season
After 4 years in Bavaria, Dortmund would welcome him again. The hometown boy returned but was not the same. Joachim Low understands this and has not included him in his plans since 2017.
At 27, Gotze still has plenty in the tank. But he doesn’t represent a good gamble. The attacking midfielder has not played more than 34 games in the last four years.
Lucien Favre has taken care into returning him to first team action. But Favre needs players who can add value to the first team. Gotze is not that man any more. A move away would be better for all parties concerned.
No understanding with the sporting department
And it looks likely that would be the case. Michael Zorc, Borussia Dortmund Sporting Director, revealed that they have yet to come to an understanding with the star player and his agents.
“That has not yet been decided,” he told Ruhr Nachrichten.
“It is of course also the case with him that he would like to have more minutes. We are talking to Mario.
“I spoke to his father before Christmas. I spoke to him again in Marbella. We will surely get together in the spring and then make a final decision.”
Shadow of his former self
Past his prime, Gotze is a shadow of his former self. And Dortmund would be better off completing their squad with someone else.
There should not be any hard feelings between the club and player. Gotze left to join their biggest rivals, and they used him to good effect. The announcement of his defect coming on the eve of their Champions League final clash.
Liverpool are interested in securing his signature, and Dortmund should allow that. Mario Gotze does not appear in their plans and is free to leave.
