Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus was crowned the VDV Player of the Season for a standout campaign in the 2018/19 Bundesliga campaign.
The VDV (Germany’s professional footballers’ association) announced Reus received 31.4% of votes for the accolade by his fellow Bundesliga players.
It capped off a superb campaign for Reus after missing most of last season through a cruciate ligament injury.
Dortmund coach Lucien Favre installed his old Borussia Monchengladbach star in a new attacking midfield position for this term. The Swiss’ bold move paid dividends, with Reus collecting three Bundesliga Player of the Month prizes.
The 30-year-old scored 17 times and provided 11 assists in just 27 Bundesliga appearances.
Despite Reus’ fine performances, however, Dortmund ended up two points off champions Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga table.
But nothing could take away the Germany international’s remarkable progress this season. In fact, Real Madrid’s new €65m signing Luka Jovic ended up a distant second with just 20.9% of votes.
Bayer Leverkusen midfielder Kai Havertz rounded off the top-three with 12.4% of the votes. The 19-year-old enjoyed a standout campaign of his own for Die Werkself, with Bayern reportedly interested in a €100m bid for him this summer.
Meanwhile, Reus’ BVB team-mate Jadon Sancho won the VDV Newcomer of the Season award with 51% of votes.
The 19-year-old winger was sensational for Dortmund, with an impressive tally of 12 goals and 17 assists in 34 Bundesliga games. The English teenager, who was voted player of the month in October, is already dreaming of winning the Ballon d’Or.
Adi Hutter won the Coach of the Season award for his stunning debut campaign at Eintracht Frankfurt. The 49-year-old led the club to a seventh-place Bundesliga finish and the Europa League semi-finals.
