Former Borussia Dortmund defender Neven Subotic reckons his old club are favourites to win the Bundesliga and end Bayern Munich’s seven-year dominance.
On the back of missing out on a first league title since 2012 by just two points, Dortmund have brought in five new players for a staggering €106m for the new season.
Among the summer arrivals is Mats Hummels, who returned to Signal Iduna Park after three years away at rivals Bayern. Meanwhile, Dortmund have also snapped up Thorgan Hazard, Julian Brandt, Nico Schulz and Mateu Morey.
Bayern, on the other hand, have only welcomed two big stars in French World Cup-winning defenders Lucas Hernandez and Benjamin Pavard.
Therefore, Subotic sees Dortmund as the clear favourites for the Bundesliga unless Bayern can bring some new faces.
“If the Bayern squad stays the same it is Dortmund. Very clearly,” he told Bild.
“I say that as a former BVB player and fan.”
On his old team-mate Hummels’ return to Dortmund, Subotic said: “I congratulate him. The team will benefit from him.
“He won four titles at Bayern during the last three years, while Dortmund only won one during that period. Dortmund will get a lot of experience in Mats. It is a big chance for him.”
Despite Hummels’ status as one of Europe’s best centre-backs, however, Bayern sensationally claimed he left the Allianz Arena in fear of the new competition for next season.
“It is normal, a club communicates it that way,” said Subotic on Bayern’s claims.
“Who is in this business for a long time knows, that it has something to do with your ego.”
Subotic spent a decade of his career at Dortmund, where he managed 263 appearances in all competitions and won two Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal titles.
The Serbian defender left BVB in January 2018 for French side Saint-Étienne, but will line-up for the newly-promoted Union Berlin back in the Bundesliga for next season.
