Dries Mertens believes that in order to dethrone Juventus, the club needs to buy world class players this summer.
Dries Mertens was part of the Napoli team that finished 11 points adrift of Juventus as the Bianconeri ended up lifting yet another Scudetto.
Over the years, the likes of Napoli and Roma have mounted title assaults but have always fallen short during some stage of the season. Last year was no different and the gulf in quality is pretty obvious.
While Juventus have become a destination of choice for some of the biggest players in the world, Napoli and other teams struggle to attract world class talent.
And Dries Mertens believes that in order to finally end Juventus’ hegemony in Italy, the club must buy top class talent. With the club hotly linked with a move for James Rodriguez from Real Madrid, chances are that the Belgium international will get his wish.
While speaking to Goal.com, Dries Mertens says that following the signing of Kostas Manolas, the club need to continue bringing in big names.
“I just want to say that I see other teams are buying a lot, we’ve signed Kostas [Manolas].”
“All those we buy must be at the top level and therefore someone like James would be welcome to aim even higher. He could make the difference.
“I think we need to buy great players to raise the level of the team. We already have a strong squad, but if we want to win something, we need to buy in order to raise the level. That is clear.”
And with Dires Mertens also linked with a move to the Chinese Super League, the club may be tempted to buy a few more world class players. That could definitely play a role in the player deciding to stay put for at least another year.
