England manager Gareth Southgate has warned goalkeeper Jack Butland that he risks losing his spot in the team if he continues playing Championship football at Stoke City
Despite being relegated from the Premier League last season, the Potters have managed to retain Butland for this season.
Southgate included Butland in his 23-man squad for next month’s internationals against Spain and Switzerland.
But had fellow keeper Nick Pope not got injured, then things could have turned out different for Butland.
And Southgate admitted that Championship football could work against Butland in future selections.
“There are four or five maximum still playing in the Premier League – obviously Jack [Butland] has dropped into the Championship and he’s now going to have a challenge to stay in the squad,” said Southgate, according to BBC.
Butland hasn’t got off to the brightest start in the Championship either after conceding nine goals in his first five matches.
Stoke are currently 17th in the league table.
