Aidy Boothroyd is set for crunch talks with the English FA following England Under 21 team’s shambolic display at the Under 21 European Championship.
The England Under 21 team crashed out of the Under 21 European Championship following some really poor displays. They lost the first game to France Under 21 when they were in a leading position with ten minutes to go. They then suffered a defeat at the hands of Romania before ending their journey with a stalemate against Croatia.
Indeed no one expected England Under 21 to perform this badly. A lot of decisions made by Boothroyd have been questioned. The biggest one has been the spare use of Manchester City starlet Phil Foden. The young midfielder came with the goods every time he was asked but was rested in the crucial game against Romania.
Moreover, Boothroyd went on to admit that Aaron Wan-Bissaka has been distracted by the Manchester United rumors. The youngster scored a stoppage-time own goal in the defeat against France. He was then dropped for games against Romania and Croatia. Indeed such decisions have made people think why Boothroyd would make such decisions so quickly.
And according to The Standard, the English FA wants answers for such displays.
Granted that Wan-Bissaka had a bad ending to the game against L’Espoirs, but he shouldn’t have been removed from the first team picture altogether. Foden on the other hand, was supposed to be driving force for England Under 21. Instead, the youngster was not used when his presence was needed the most.
While there has been speculation about his future, Boothroyd doesn’t have any intention of leaving. With a contract that runs until May 21, the Englishman has achieved a lot with England Under 21 which gives him a lot of bargaining power.
Moreover, it was England Under 21 that was well represented at the Nations League finals this summer. Seven players from the Under 21 setup featured for the Three Lions.
