Ex-Celtic player among those injured in deadly Honduras football riot

During the match between Olimpia and Motagua, three people were killed and at least seven seriously wounded after the ultras from both clubs caused a riot.

Honduras’ National Stadium was a witness of a deadly football riot between followers of Olimpia and Motagua.

At least three people were killed and seven are seriously wounded, including former Celtic footballer Emilio Izaguirre.

Izaguirre was on board of a bus that was attacked outside the stadium as Motagua made its way to play the match.

Teammates Roberto Moreira and Jonathan Rougier were also transferred to the hospital with facial wounds from the shattered bus windows.

“Three people died and seven were shot and stabbed. One of them is a boy. Three of the injured adults are in critical condition,” added a spokeswoman for Tegucigalpa’s University School Hospital according to Sky Sports.

Celtic winger Mikey Johnston was disappointed to miss Scotland Under 21 national team's victories over San Marino and Croatia, and he hopes he can return to play soon.

The Honduras national league is currently suspended while authorities await the result of investigations into the matter.
