Cesc Fabregas has weighed in his opinion on how Cristiano Ronaldo continues to set the standards in football at the age of 36.
Cristiano Ronaldo’s constant desire to improve and ability to adapt his game are key reasons behind his current form, suggests Cesc Fabregas.
Ronaldo is only two years older than Fabregas, yet their careers are on almost completely different trajectories now. CR7 continues to lead Portugal and Juventus’ European title assaults in his mid-thirties. Fabregas, on the other hand, hasn’t played international football since Euro 2016 and currently suits up for Monaco in Ligue 1.
And the way Ronaldo, and even his former Barcelona teammate Lionel Messi, continues to thrive is not lost on Fabregas, who hailed the duo’s success as extraordinary.
“Cristiano Ronaldo is the outfield player I have faced most during my career and it is amazing that 16 years since we were first on the same pitch together that he is still making history and setting records,” Fabregas wrote in his Telegraph column.
“One more goal in the European Championships will make Cristiano the highest-ever scorer in international football and, along with my friend Lionel Messi, I do not think I will see his type again.
“Everybody knows that I think Leo is the best player ever, but I have the utmost respect for Cristiano and he is one of the best players in the history of football. There is no doubt about that. He’s a fantastic player, fantastic professional and a proper winner.
“What really stands out about Cristiano is his hunger to be better and to improve, and keep posting these crazy numbers. To do that for 16 years and be super, super competitive for that amount of time, like Leo, it is something extraordinary.
“Now, of course, he is a different player and the one we see for Portugal in this tournament who smells the danger and is there for the killer touch or the killer moment. He is no longer the player who is running the whole game, instead he is very smart and very intelligent.

“Cristiano and Leo, even though Leo is slightly younger, they know who they are and they know their bodies, and a lot of the time these days you will see them just walking or standing, waiting for the right moment.
“They would be the only two players in the world who you would allow to do that because you know they will still be decisive.”
