Lucien Favre confirmed that Marco Reus is set to make a timely return for Borussia Dortmund’s derby against Schalke 04 on Saturday.
Reus was a no-show for Borussia Dortmund’s 2-0 Champions League defeat to Inter Milan midweek due to a cold. However, Favre is optimistic his captain will return for the big derby with Schalke.
Sadly, though, the same cannot be said for Marcel Schmelzer and Paco Alcacer. The duo, who are struggling with hip and calf problems respectively, will again be on the sidelines.
Alcacer’s problems, especially, have become a growing concern over at Signal Iduna Park. In fact, the former Barcelona striker hasn’t played for BVB since a 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen on September 28.
“With Marco Reus, we’ll still have to wait and see whether or not he’ll be able to make an appearance on Saturday, but he’s certainly feeling a lot better now,” said Favre on the club’s website.
“There’s a good chance that he’ll play.”
The Dortmund coach, meanwhile, heads to Schalke in need of a strong result given the recent pressure on his shoulders. There was even talk recently of Jose Mourinho possibly replacing him this season.
But Favre’s full focus was on Schalke, who have risen to seventh in the Bundesliga under former Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner.
”They’ve found a certain stability,” continued the Swiss.
“They’re very good at pressing, extremely athletic across the park and can run all day.”
Sporting director Michael Zorc added: ”I expect our team to show everyone that they know just how much this game means.
“Obviously from the perspective of the league table, but especially for the fans. I expect them to demonstrate that they want to win this game at any cost.
“For every metre that Schalke runs, I expect us to run one more. We want to see the team push for the win with every fibre of their being.”
The Schalke and Dortmund derby starts at 15:30 (CET) on Saturday.
