With a brace from Lionel Messi and a screamer from Coutinho, FC Barcelona completely dominated Manchester United at Camp Nou.

FC Barcelona’s ghosts from last season were palpable at the start of tonight’s Champions League match vs Manchester United.

The Catalan club was coming from a three-year drought in the tournament’s quarterfinals with Lionel Messi not scoring a single goal in all six matches.

The Red Devils had high hopes of a comeback after their historic night at Parc des Princes in the round of 16 but facing Barcelona was a very different challenge for them.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad has survived this far in the competition despite having a clear player deficit that has limited their capabilities from the very beginning.

The Norwegian manager was still going to try to motivate his limited squad in order to look for an initial goal that gave them enough confidence at Camp Nou.

Manchester United started the match with bravery and they came very close to scoring a couple of time through Marcus Rashford during the initial six minutes.

One of those chances hit the bar and the other attempt went slightly wide as Barcelona got a little more comfortable on the pitch.

We gotta give Solskjaer credit for his initial plan, it was a good one.

It was all going well until, Messi…

But playing against Lionel Messi this season at Camp Nou has become increasingly difficult for any squad in Europe.

The Argentine needed 16 minutes to remind everyone he is having one of the best seasons of his career.

As he recovered a ball in the final third he nutmegged Fred and moved to the outskirts of the box.

When Lionel Messi approaches with such confidence and advantage, you already know where his shot will go.

What comes next for Messi is the inevitability and impotence that all his rivals experience this season at Camp Nou.

David De Gea did his best to prevent that shot taken to the bottom corner and FC Barcelona ended all of Manchester United’s hopes to get this turn-around.

What followed next was an absolute howler from David De Gea after another shot from Leo Messi that initially appeared easy for the Spanish goalkeeper.

It was the 20th minute of the match at Camp Nou and Lionel secured the semifinal ticket within four minutes.

WhoScored tells us that this brace gives Lionel Messi his 10th goal of the Champions League this season and his 45th in all competitions.

Lionel also has 15 assists in a total of 44 appearances only for FC Barcelona.

Coutinho gets his “revenge”

The Catalan club went into halftime with this two-goal advantage knowing that they practically had the semifinal ticket in the bag.

All they needed now was to protect their result and possibly get another goal that would completely end with Manchester United’s hopes.

It took the Catalan club another 16 minutes into the second half to find that goal through Philippe Coutinho.

The Brazilian midfielder needed to get a good performance in a match as important as this one in order to respond to his critics.

The former Liverpool player responded with a beautiful screamer from outside the box for Barcelona’s third goal of the evening.

During his celebration, Coutinho looked at the stands and covered his ears as a response to all his critics.

This third goal was the final blow against a Manchester United chance that never really had a chance to get the result at Camp Nou.

This is a fitting end of the competition for a club that was limited from the very start of the season under Jose Mourinho.

It’s a perfect time for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to finally focus on the Premier League and that elusive Top Four position that will be incredibly difficult to get.

Barcelona will wait for the Liverpool vs Porto second leg to know their next rival in the semifinals.
