Swiss club FC Zurich has denounced the actions of their fans who threw a banana at FC Basel striker Aldo Kalulu on Sunday.

FC Zurich fans threw a banana at Kalulu on Sunday when the Rwandan striker went to take a corner kick.

The 22-year-old also had cigarette lighters hurled at him in the ninth minute of Basel’s 2-0 win.

According to Sky Sports, Zurich released a statement admitting their supporters were culpable and condemned their action.

“In the early stages of (the match) against Basel, a banana was thrown out of FCZ’s fan zone towards FCB player Aldo Kalulu when he went to take a corner,” a club statement read.

“The club strongly condemns this racist behavior and does not tolerate it in any way. There is no room for xenophobia and discrimination in football.

“FCZ has always been committed to diversity and welcomes all people, regardless of their background or religion.”
