Ferdinand doesn’t believe van Dijk deserves the UEFA Men’s Player of the Season award

According to the former English Premier League footballer, the Dutch defender doesn’t deserve the UEFA award as Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are still the best talents in the planet.

Liverpool star Virgil van Dijk won the UEFA Men’s Player of the Season Award this week.

But according to former English Premier League footballer, Rio Ferdinando, the Reds player should have not won.

Instead, the award should have gone to Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

“There is no doubt in my mind that Virgil van Dijk is the best defender on the planet today,” the ex-Manchester United and England man was quoted by Goal.

“But when a man scores 50 goals in a season as Messi did, or Cristiano won three trophies this season, the effect he’s had on a new championship and at a national level as well, you can’t look beyond that.”

“People say, ‘ah it’s a bit boring that those two are still winning’ but they’re putting up numbers that have never been seen before, for 12, 15 years,” he commented.

“I’m a center-half and I’m delighted that he’s won it, I think he’s a worthy winner, but when you’ve got a man scoring 50 you can’t do that.”

Thomas Delaney, Borussia Dortmund

“I’m not Messi!” Dortmund’s Delaney downplays comparisons

Thomas Delaney has cooled talk comparing him to Barcelona star Lionel Messi after impressing in Borussia Dortmund's 4-0 thrashing of Bayer Leverkusen.

Ferdinand added: “I would not spend my hard-earned cash to come to watch a defender.”

“Entertain me! I want to be taken off my seat, to scream and go, ‘Oh my God, what a performance, what a goal’. The hardest thing to do in the game is to score a goal.”
