Romelu Lukaku has all the required attributes to go from being just a great finisher to a Manchester United legend, says Rio Ferdinand.
After going nine games without finding the net, Lukaku brought his tally up to four goals in his last two outings for United following Saturday’s 3-2 win against Southampton.
The Belgian striker appears to have found his scoring touch again at a key phase of the season with United needing to overturn a 2-0 aggregate deficit against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday in their Champions League last-16 tie at France.
Therefore, the Red Devils will need Lukaku firing on all cylinders at Paris and 2008 Champions League winner Ferdinand is feeling optimistic about the 25-year-old.
“He’s been very one dimensional at times this season, and over the years at Manchester United you’ve rarely seen that type of striker be a success,” Ferdinand told talkSPORT.
“With that said he’s certainly shown signs of improvements in recent weeks.
“I watched him against Arsenal at the Emirates and he was very good. He played the role he was given brilliantly.”
While Ferdinand agrees with former United team-mate Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that Lukaku is indeed a great finisher, the ex-England international feels the striker must add more aggression in his game.
“The attributes Lukaku has to his game means he should be unplayable. He’s strong, he’s quick, but he needs to be more aggressive,” added Ferdinand.
“It’s down to him if he can bring all of his attributes together. He can be anything he wants to be.
“For me, he’s probably the most natural finisher at the football club, the best finisher in all honesty.
“But Manchester United football club demand more than someone who is a just a great finisher.
“It’s also down to Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer]. Does he fancy him as a player and is he prepared to spend the time and effort into helping him become a Manchester United legend?
“They are the questions that need to be answered and they will be in time.”
Lukaku has managed 13 goals and four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions this season for United.
