Ex-Red Devils legend Dimitar Berbatov is convinced Bruno Fernandes can help make Manchester United compete for titles again.

Bruno Fernandes has been nothing short of an inspirational signing since he made his debut for United in January.

With eight goals and seven assists in 14 appearances so far, the Portuguese has been one of the most in-form players in the Premier League since January.

The arrival of Fernandes coincided with United’s rich run of form that ultimately saw them finish third and qualify for the Champions League next season.

The next agenda for Ole Solskjaer is to build on the club’s recent standards and take United back to the dominant side they once were under Sir Alex Ferguson.

With Fernandes now in the United squad and making a difference, Berbatov agrees the Red Devils are a stronger looking side.

“The signing of Bruno Fernandes lifted the team massively. The team’s spirit changed when he came in, he has blended in really well, connecting the back four and the attack.” Berbatov said to Betfair.

“To step up and show that responsibility is huge, he’s been an amazing signing for them. He’s important to United, but important to the players around him also.”

“He’s been a very pleasant surprise, because usually one player doesn’t make such a difference. United need to maintain this level of consistency.”

Manchester City and Liverpool have risen to the top of English football and Berbatov insists a club like United should not be far off.

“By default, my opinion is United should be challenging for the title, even when going through difficult periods.”

“It’s been a challenging few years, but the fact remains that United need to be challenging for the title. They need to improve again to challenge Man City and Liverpool next season, but they can do it.”

“Every season is different and has its unique ups and downs, the teams you expect don’t always end up doing well, but with United you always expect them to be title contenders, especially if they make some signings.”

After securing a Champions League spot, Fernandes already has his sights on Europa League glory.
