Portuguese legend Luis Figo, confirmed that he believes Luka Modric completely deserves the Goal 50 Award for best player in the world.

We recently reported that Goal.com, recently named Luka Modric as the best player in the world for the year 2018 and people like Luis Figo have supported the Croatian midfielder after receiving the honor.

This may come as a surprise to a lot of people because the former Real Madrid player, is from Portugal and he isn’t supporting his compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo, who also had a fantastic year after winning the Champions League for Real Madrid and scoring over 50 goals last season.

But Figo has been doing this for the last couple of months, recently he also stated that Ronaldo Nazario is the better player out of the two forwards who bear the same name.

Now he is talking about Luka Modric deserving the award and practically stating that he is the top candidate to win the Ballon d’Or in December.

We have no idea if Figo has something against Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Juventus forward has never liked it when someone diminishes his fork in such fashion and much less from a fellow Portuguese like Luis.

Figo who also played for Real Madrid and even won the Ballon d’Or himself in the year 2000, has been making the rounds for Goal as a spokesperson for the website and made a stern defense of the Croatian midfielder who reached a historic World Cup final with his national team last summer.

Unfortunately for Luka, he wasn’t able to win the trophy after losing against France but this didn’t matter to the 42 voters from all editions on the publication when they cast their vote. They all agree with what Figo said this week about Modric.

“Modric is one of those who certainly deserved an individual prize,” former Madrid star Figo said to Goal.

“These awards are always subjective but, without a doubt, Modric has had a wonderful season. “He made the difference with his national team and with Real Madrid.”

“For this reason, his prize is well deserved. I live in Madrid and although we did not play together, we attended the same places, knew the same people, also shared family moments together.”

Report: Luka Modric agrees a new deal at Real Madrid

Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has reportedly reached an agreement with Real Madrid to extend his contract until June 2021.

“He is a great person and it makes me happy that this year he has won so many individual trophies.”

But the Ballon d’Or trophy will be a whole other story, France Football has been known for having a little more common sense when they deliver their prestigious Ballon d’Or award and this year should be no different.

Modric did win the Champions League this year alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, but the individual honor is one that may likely go to a French player after the World Cup success that Les Bleus had during the competition played in Russia.

The top candidates for the trophy are Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo from Juventus, and Kylian Mbappé might give us all an unexpected surprise and might squeeze into the final three-men list f players who complete the podium for this year’s Ballon d’Or.

Modric winning the trophy after getting so many accolades already, doesn’t seem like the obvious choice as all the voters favor the other players who are mentioned here.

Even Raphael Varane seems like a player who could appear on the final list instead of Luka Modric.
