Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard and Jadon Sancho put reminded Bundesliga fans their abilities as they sent five goals past a hapless Fortuna defense.
Lucien Favre is a relieved man at the Westfalenstadion. Away defeats to Bayern Munich and Barcelona, with a draw sandwiched in between, had raised question marks regarding his suitability with Borussia Dortmund.
While his detractors had a difficult time sleeping after BVB’s 5-0 win against Fortuna Dusseldorf, he must be content with the result. A week ago Favre had managed a tricky away win in Berlin despite going down to 10 men.
Marco Reus and Jadon Sancho scored a brace apiece, while also adding to their assist tallies. Thorgan Hazard finished the game with a goal and an assist. Lukasz Piszczek set Reus free for the opener, while Achraf Hakimi supplied the ball for Sancho’s second and the final goal of the match.
Their four goal blitz in the second half was a joy to watch for fans and neutral alike. Moreover, BVB managed to keep a clean sheet at the Signal Iduna Park. It was their first in six games, signaling an end to their defensive crisis during which they have conceded 13 goals.
Man of the hour
Sancho was the star of the night. He was a nightmare for Dusseldorf defenders and deserved all the plaudits.
Linked with a move away from Germany, he gave a timely reminder for potential suitors of his abilities. And with Chelsea’s transfer ban overturned, his performance put the rumor mill into overdrive.
It propelled Michel Zorc to put any transfer talk to rest as BVB continue their title challenge.
“We continue to plan with him, he is an elementarily important player. I don’t see any scenario of him leaving us in winter,” Michel Zorc told Ruhrnachrichten.
Such rumors negatively impact the dressing room but Favre will rejoice for the moment. Football is a fickle world and situations change fast. As Favre is being heralded, Hans-Dieter Flick’s job is under threat.
But it is not in Bavaria that Dortmund and other Bundesliga fans eyes are set. It is across North Rhine-Westphalia at Borussia Park. Gladbach secured a 2-1 win over Bayern Munich, throwing them out of top-four slots and into 7th place on the points table.
While Borussia Dortmund’s win allowed Borussia to lay claim to third place in Bundesliga. They are five point away from Gladbach and still in the race for German top flight honors.
