Mixed night for the youngest side in European history
Solskjaer fielded the youngest XI in European competition on Thursday, with the squad boasting an average age of just 22.
It included three debutants in Di’Shon Bernard, Dylan Levitt and Ethan Laird. While veteran goalkeeper Lee Grant made his first start in a Red Devils jersey.
Three more players made their first-team debuts as substitutes in Largie Ramazani, D’Mani Mellor and Ethan Galbraith. In fact, no club had introduced so many debutants in a match since World War I.
But Solskjaer’s youngsters struggled in the second-half, with a Laird and Bernard mix-up leading to Astana’s equaliser. The latter then accidentally diverted the ball into the back of the net off his own chest to seal the defeat.
Although Levitt impressed with his touch and movement in the game before eventually fading.
