Marcus Rashford set things in motion when his effort flew past Paulo Gazzaniga to hand the hosts a sixth-minute lead. However, Dele Alli brilliantly equalised just six minutes before the break.
But United continued to have the measure of Spurs in the second-half, with Rashford soon restoring their lead.
After Moussa Sissoko fouled him in the area, the England international fired home a 49th-minute penalty. It was enough to hand the Red Devils all three points, and to ensure a miserable return for Mourinho.
