Darren Fletcher claims that his old club Manchester United feared Wayne Rooney would move to Real Madrid
An 18-year-old Rooney joined United in 2004 from Everton and went on to break Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record along with winning 16 major honours.
But as Rooney developed into a United great, the club feared the likes of Real would snatch him from under their noses.
“You could tell Wayne was going to go on and be a Manchester United great,” Fletcher told Sky Sports of his old team-mate.
“The only worry was would a Real Madrid or someone like that come in for him, because that was quite possible.
“But there was no doubt that he was going to go on and win everything, go on and be club captain and end up England and Manchester United’s leading goalscorer – what an achievement.”
Rooney managed 253 goals and 146 assists in 559 games across all competitions for United.
The English striker left Old Trafford in 2017 and now plays his club football in the MLS with DC United.
