Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick has said Robert Lewandowski is in line to win the Ballon d’Or award after an impressive 51 goals this season.
Hansi Flick has backed Lewandowski to win the Ballon d’Or award, saying he has laid the groundwork to be considered a top contender.
The Polish forward saw yet another brilliant individual season with Bayern.
Lewandowski scored an impressive 34 goals to see him awarded the top scorer award in the Bundesliga.
His fifth overall since he joined the German top flight. Even more impressive considering he missed three games for his side.
In cup competitions, the 31-year-old already had 15 goals in the Champions League and DFB-Pokal combined. However, his brace against Bayer Leverkusen in the cup final yesterday saw him take his season tally to 51 goals.
That makes Lewandowski the top scorer in Europe’s top five leagues this season. Asked if the forward can win the Ballon d’Or award, Hansi Flik thinks ‘why not?’.
“Fifty-one goals are already very strong. The first goal Lewy scored, the third goal we scored, was already excellent.” Flick said via Goal.
“The way he takes the ball down there and the way he locks up. Of course, he’s had a bit of luck with that as well. But that’s what distinguishes him, that he has this confidence in his quality.”
“If I measure for goals now and I see that he has scored 34 goals in the Bundesliga this year, then you can think about how a player from the Bundesliga can become the Ballon d’Or winner. So why not? He has laid all the groundwork with this achievement this year and I would wish him well.”
With Bayern still in the Champions League, Lewandowski can still even add more to his season’s tally.
He is no doubt the best striker in world football right now.
