Former Barcelona boss Ernesto Valverde appears to be backing his old employer’s bitter rivals Real Madrid for the La Liga title.

If Ernesto Valverde had thought such a thing during his tenure at Barcelona there would have been uproar. The fact he has had an association with the club so recently will still have sent shock waves through its heart.

The former manager appears to be backing his old club’s arch-nemesis Real Madrid for La Liga glory this year.

Valverde’s record as Barcelona boss was not too shabby but paled in significance to the likes of Pep Guardiola.

More importantly, he picked up two La Liga titles, a Copa Del Rey and a Spanish Super Cup.

It was apparently insufficient. Although we can’t say Valverde was fired because he was unsuccessful.

After all, Barca was top of the league and through to the knock out stages of the Champions League undefeated.

He was ultimately dismissed for his style of football. This perhaps is why he has the right to feel a little aggrieved with the Catalonians.

In an interview reported by The Evening Standard, he feels his one-time foe may be in a position this season to break his old side’s domestic stranglehold.

He said:

“Madrid are strong and very focused on the league title.”
