Former Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs striker, Marc Batchelor was shot dead near his home in Johannesburg.

Batchelor was considered a legendary striker who found the back of the net for both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.

The former striker reportedly had a chequered past with many people claiming that he was very close to some of the most notorious people in the city’s underworld.

Batchelor was reportedly attacked by two men who were riding a motorbike. The incident happened when the former striker was about to drive the car into his premises.

Batchelor was shot several times before the two men fled the scene.

“He was attacked by two men who were driving a motorbike,” a police spokesman Col Lungelo Dlamini told South African Broadcasting Corporation.

“He was about to drive into his premises. The suspects shot several times at him.”

Dlamini added: “He died inside the car and they drove away without taking anything.

“At this stage, we are still investigating what the motive for the attack was and these suspects have not yet been identified.”

Kaizer Chiefs chairman, Kaizer Motaung was shocked about the news of Batchelor’s passing.

“I am shocked to learn about the passing of former Kaizer Chiefs player Marc Batchelor,” said the club’s chairman Kaizer Motaung.

“On behalf of Kaizer Chiefs, I wish to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, friends and the football fraternity. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”

Batchelor famously had a feud with former Paralympian Oscar Pistorius who was jailed for brutally murdering his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

The two men never saw eye to eye as the striker stood against Pistorius in his murder trial. Reportedly, Pistorius had also threatened to break Batchelor’s legs at one point.

For now, investigations are ongoing and not much can be said what exactly led to the murder of a famous football figure.
