One time assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, Rene Meulensteen insists Jesse Lingard is suffering a “slight dent” in confidence but can be like Andres Iniesta.
Jesse Lingard has had a year to forget. He has seen his form drop to the point where he is no longer a guaranteed starter at United and he has lost his place in the England squad.
His stats for 2019 made for some terrible reading.
This kind of form has been coupled with his off-field social media antics. Don’t forget his teaming up with super-agent Mino Raiola. Put all this together and it’s no surprise an exit from United is rumored to be on the cards.
However, former United coach and assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson, Rene Meulensteen, believes Lingard can overcome this dip in form. Speaking to The Michael Anthony Show he believes the United player has Barcelona legend Iniesta like qualities to offer the team.
“Jesse always had attributes in his game as Iniesta had for Barcelona.”
“In my opinion – and I think he knows it himself, he’s a great kid.”
“He’s the sort of player that’s so difficult for opposition teams to mark.”
“I think it’s more a confidence thing, you need to recognize as staff and coaches and say ‘okay, when did you have the best games?”
“When did you score the most goals? And why isn’t it happening now?”
“Somewhere down that line there’s a dent and you need to find that and what you can do to make sure the focus goes back.”
Lingard himself admits to watching the Barcelona legend on youtube. But let us be honest given his current form he is not even a poor imitation.
